The release party last night at Ghetto Gloss on Melrose was a great turnout and a ton of cool folks (i spotted Millie from Freaks and Geeks there!) and my ol illustrator pals Ad McCauley and Tim Brock from SF showed up too. And my development producer pal Mary Harrington of Invader Zim . Yahoo. Also got to display my giant Glue painting on plexiglass featuring Trixie and Ponch. And hang with the Titmouse folks, makers of Metalocalypse and Super Jail. Awesomes.

KUNG FU SPY TROLL

KUNG FU SPY TROLL was a pilot I created for Nickelodeon. The snake , Fang, was voiced by Tom Kenny (spongebob), and the Troll was voiced by Danny Strong (an actor who went on to write the HBO movie Recount and I think was nominated for an Emmy). Go Spy Troll, I mean Danny! The pilot was directed by the very talented Louie Del Carmen. Produced by Mary Harrington of Ren and Stimpy and Invader Zim. It didn't go to series, obviously, or you'd probably have seen stretchy Fang toys everywhere by now.

The interstitial block was meant to bridge the gap between computer and television, they lived in the "zeether" which i guess was the white noise in between the two media platforms. Freeeaaaaky. Fun picture from halloween. Milo my 12 year old went as an emo person. I'm currently writing a semi autobiographical coming of age novel and I realized as I'm writing there are a lot of horror movie references. I watched a lot of Creature Features with Bob Wilkins. and now the boy seems to be following in the footsteps, going through a horror movie phase. I need to verse him in some classics, though, like Alien, Westworld, Invasion of the Body snatchers, The Howling,the shining. and some really old ones like Frankenstien , Teenage werewolf, etc. He keeps asking me about The Ring but he ain't seein' it. It scared the crap outta me and I'm a big person.

Calef Brown from Tiny Snail Town

We recently converted our garage into a studio space. yahoo! Now I can draw someplace other than the living room. And the first picture we hung in the room was a Calef Brown painting. I traded him a painting for a 3-d dog sculpture I did a while back. It's amazing how the colors work perfectly in there. It's not the painting above, though. That's a piece from Calef's website. His use of color blows my mind. Thank garsh somebody still paints on paper and wood and not just the computer. Calef's funkadelic folk stylings are best known from his children's books Polka Bats and Octopuss Slacks, Dutch Sneakers and Flea Keepers and his new hit book Flamingos on the Roof. Ducks that ride in bathtub cars. Surfers in the desert. Funk lovin' snowmen. My son Milo's favorite character is Ed, who loves the color red and has a cherry on his head. Calef let Milo read the poem out loud to a roomful of fans at a book signing. Little Golden Moments. Ok, I keep looking at this picture and it makes me want to go draw. I know I'm always ranting and raving about my talented friends, but this one is actually related. Brian O'Connel is my bro in law, also known by the neices and nephs as Uncle Bunny. He runs a very cool animation studio in NY called Asterisk. They do animated ads, web stuff, and music vids. One of my favorites is Dr Worm by They Might Be giants. A worm that plays the drums! And one of my favorite cartoonists KAZ designed it. I've never met him but maybe someday. and I'm sure someday in the future I'll join forces with Asterisk on something cool. ADSKI IS BADSKI (in a goodski kind of way)

Adam McCauley, the master illustrator blaster. His work is probably best known for The Wayside School and The Time Warp Trio. He also did his own little book a while back called My Friend Chicken that my daughter loves. Adam is a good friend from the SF music scene, our bands used to play together at a fine Oakland bar called Merchant's. Long live Little My! The kid can play drums. He was a pro illustrator at the time and I was still scratching out little comix under my bed. Every time I see his books at Barnes and Noble it inspires me to try and complete some of my half started kids book projects. But he was very encouraging to try and get my stuff published years back. And he and his wife Cindy drive a Previa, which inspired us to get a Previa. Man, the list goes on. The last three times I saw Ad and Cindy it was in a mountain setting all in different locales: the Catskills, Nevada City, and Calistoga. Isabel Samaras and the Conquest for the Planet of the Apes

Isabel paints with a very fine brush. Rumour tells that it only has one bristle. Needless to say, her paintings are quite awesome in their awesomeness and capture odd moments from pop culture's past. Like this one. I was obsessed with Planet of the Apes as a small boy. I had the action figures, and my friend and I knew we were going to get more for Xmas so we plotted an entire battle scene before we even had the toys. My personal fave is Conquest for the Planet of the Apes. Me and my brother "accidentally" saw it, we walked in the wrong door at the movies. "Hey this isn't Pinnochio!" Apes wielding machine guns. scary good. And they win! then they made a tv show, which rocked my world on friday nights. Long live Roddy McDowell. And Heston. Thanks for the flashback, Isabel. REMEMBERING UNCLE TED and CLUTCH CARGO

This handsome cartoon gent with a human mouth is Clutch Cargo, as many of you born in the fifties or sixties may know. Or if you saw Pulp fiction, Bruce Willis' character as a child is watching it on tv . My late Uncle Ted Gillette invented the wacky animation technology called Synchro Vox at Cambria Studios, real mouths super-imposed over limited animation characters. The pirate at the beginning of the Spongebob theme is done with Synchro Vox, as well as segments on Conan O'Brien. The reason it's in my blog right now is that I was just at my Aunt Jean Gillette's house for a family reunion in Brentwood and I was talking with my cousin April about her dad's cool and funky contributions to the world of animation. Uncle Ted also made a really long slide in his backyard that my kids were having a blast on, and a treehouse that looked like a real miniature house that me and my brother slept in once as kids. Ted was a great guy, very funny, kind, and took us out in his yacht once to Catalina Island. He passed away at the age of 94. Cambria Studios also produced a Three Stooges cartoon, amongst others. Wikepedia has more info, and you might recognize some of the cartoons they made. Here's to you, Uncle Ted!

The Penguin Who Started It All

Before all the penguin movies there was Tenessee Tuxedo, one of my favorite cartoons as a kid from King Leonardo tv. Chumley is his doofus walrus sidekick, and Mr Whoopee was the go-to guy for inventions and the 3-DBB (3 dimensional black board). Leonardo also did Tooter Turtle and Mr Wizard. They looked like Jat Ward cartoons, another all time favorite. We had a black and white tv, we couldn't get the cool color cable shows like Speed Racer on Ch 44, only KTVU channel 2. George of the Jungle, Tom Slick, Sydney the Elephant, Milton the Monster. The low rent cartoons of the sixties rule!

"Bob"... 'When you put the letters backwards it still spells Bob'. That was a song by an old SF band called Ed's Redeeming Qualities. But not Bob Boyle, when you put his letters backwards it spells Flimpenglergle. It's true. What's also true is Bob Boyle created a wonderful show for Nick, jr called Wow Wow Wubbzy! It's way cool, and it's my daughter's favorite show. Bob also has a show called Yin Yang Yo . How many shows does this guy have, you ask? Well, soon he will rule the universe and it will be bright yellow.
Brad Mossman does the music for Wubbzy as well, and one night we three were sitting around drawing. That's when the idea for the doodledorks blog came about. Bob drew these li'l funky pix and let me keep them. Hello ebay! Not really. They're mine all mine.

James james james singin' whoa oh james. Wasn't that the theme to a show long ago starring Lance Kerwin? Whatever. The James i know stars in his own books, like this one. Actually Andy Rheingold wrote this with him (i before e?) Both of these fine chaps i've collab'd with. Jim draws and writes, and now manages other artist writers for books, like me. He lives on a farm somewhere far away. He did a book called Johnny Mutton. his characters have large upper lips, and they talk really loud. Not Jim, though. He whispers. Except when he comes over for taco night and the tacos aren't ready. This blog was inspired by Jim's blog, the link is over to the right where the other links live. Andy writes shows for big networks, like the wonderful Cartoon Network. He also plays soccer, and is married to one of my favorite peeps, Amy Jackson, who is a development whirlwind and gave me one of my first breaks in animation. Keep her away from rose bushes, though, unless you've got gauze and ointment handy. They helped create something coming soon called Skunk Fu. and that be that.

Ol' MOSSY is bossy

B Mossman. He's a real wing dinger. He used to play in a band called Harm Farm in San Francisco. Our bands played together a lot.
He sang about clams and grannies. Now he sings the theme song for Bob Boyle's grand cartoon called Wow Wow Wubbzy on Nick Jr. Oh, and he did the theme for my web cartoon Glue. We went to Paris once. He enjoys rhyming, drawing, eating Danish chocolate, and listening to guided by voices.

Beck, Guided by Voices. everyone thinks this creature is a fox, but i intended for it to be a rat, in reference to the song "Rat in a Cage". Hey, it's whatever you want it to be. I never met the actual band, although i saw them in Holland when my friend Carrie Bradley was touring with the Breeders. Oh, i met them. Good times. I played guitar with Kim deal. Not on stage. In their hotel room. In Paris. On the floor. Fellow Artists Eric White and Brad Mossman were there, which leads into the next blog entries.

Bwana Spoons is the King of Pink Pawcorn

The art of Bwana Spoons. This is a piece entitled Greetings from Nipple Island. He is a crazy genius that I knew around the SF art scene long ago who now resides in Portland. He is a kind, swell human. I did some comix for his zine Aint Nothin Like F@#$%'N Moonshine. Bwana has tapped into the gelatin volcano of glee, his paintings make my teeth feel like i just chewed an entire purple flavor pixie stick (and I mean the jumbo tube, m'fren). He now runs a gallery called Grass Hut and shows many fine artists including the wondrous Tim Biskup (whom i don't know but love his drawrings). My work has appeared in a few group shows with Bwana in LA, including La Luz and New Image Art, and hopefully more someday if i ever find the time to paint again. Go Bwana!

Melt-Aways

Black lines on paper. Rapidiograph, ink, bristol paper. The rule is i can't sketch it first, it's wherever the ink takes me. time melts away when i make these drawings, and sometimes it seems as though I may even be channeling from another dimensional fold. Some wacky characters can pop from these. I pulled one out and blew it up big and used it for a Guided By Voices poster I did years ago for ArtRock in San Francisco. I always feel like I'm wasting good paper if I don't fill up every section of the bristol. I also sometimes pick a character i like then do it big with vinyl paint on plexiglass. So there.

tripping over the lunch lady

This is a page from the kid's story compilation Tripping Over The Lunch Lady, from dial books. JimProimos (Johnny Mutton) wrote the story, i drew the comix. It was actually a blast drawing someone else's story for once. All the stories were based on real childhood events, and this one was about how Jim as a kid was always late for the bus. In this panel he rides the bus home, which is a nightmare in itself. I never rode a bus to school. I walked through a drainage ditch, though, and onetime saw a broken mayo bottle cooking in the sun. That was a nightmare, shoo boy. There was also a girl who would stop me after school and threaten to beat me up because she liked my brother. My childhood terrors were always somehow linked to my brother. He's probably the one who threw that mayo bottle in the ditch!

Wilty and the Plane

This is a panel from a graphic novel i started called Wilty and the Plane, about an old fellow trapped in a parallel universe with a tiny talking airplane. Problem is after i started this i got distracted and started a novel, a kid's book, a film script, and on and on. It's the overabundance of ideas. I need a bit of follow-through. I need real deadlines, like with this animated proj. I'm working on, that's the only way things get completed. I have a garage full of unfinished comix. Why couldn't i have been like the Dilbert guy or the Garfield guy. A fat cat who loves lasagna...one idea... for the rest of my life. Oh, but then i'd surely be out of my tree. But frickin' rich, baby!

CHOWDER rules! The new cartoon on Cartoon Network from CH Greenblatt is marvelously sugar coated in pure glee sauce. This is what cartoons are supposed to be. i love it , the kids love it. So there. Look out Spongebob. and random humor up the wazoo, which of course I'm partial to. A snail car! A pet fart cloud! Friday nights are fun again. This show will be huge. The art direction makes my eyes splode. and Mung daal looks like a regurgitated smurf fused with a keebler elf. Gazpacho is my fave, though, i hang on his every word. And Panini the bunny girl. Oh and the Game board monster, sheer genius, the weird needy awkward freak friend. Plus my Mom used to make Gazpacho in the summer time, good stuff. And since I'm working on a top secret CN project this all makes me very excited. it makes me feel like Im a kid again.

the return of glue and a brief history henceforth

"Hello Arther, howz yer ribs?"

So glue is now a proud member of youtube. glue was a web cartoon i created at wildbrain.com about 6 years ago. and what a time that was, childrens, the dot com days of yesteryore. i initially pitched Jeff Fino and John Hayes —the wildbrain owners and old friends from my days at Colossal Pictures —a scrappy little Gary Panter-inspired (Jimbo!) random comic strip called Glue. I wanted to do a comic strip that was not sketched, just drawn in ink. In other words, whatever spilled from the pen was what it was. no corrections or white out. an improv comic strip if ye will. And so when they told me they wanted to make it animated, i was psyched. none of us really knew what we were doing, flash cartoons were new territory. at first they wanted it to be an interactive cartoon, but we scrapped that and just went for a straight ahead cartoon, broken into two minute episodes. the first couple episodes were verbatim from the comic strip. the "story" started to evolve by the fifth episode, and since i ran out of comix epsodes started making it up, actually storyboarding it, and adding new characters. the very first glue character ever drawn was Pipe, the coffee guzzling lizard, who was pushing his long armed baby Weeji through the supermarket. I did his voice too. I think i was channeling Ernest Borgnine. Arther, the injury-prone mutated fox creature was next. then ghost of granny. Ponch was born in episode two, along with bald headed Trixie and Snailbody, her pet. all these characters were parts of people i knew in my childhood. I remember our weird neighbor kid peeking over the fence with a gigantic space helmet on once.—Gooner! his dad was pummit, a mean ex-marine who threatened to hang us if we went on his lawn. and there was a spoiled kid who bragged about his dad owning a dragster—ponch! And a kid obsessed with Star Trek and all things outer space—Rentweld! I never knew a transvestite troll, though. Where the hell did that come from? Day on the Green was Day on the Dirt. and snails, lots of snails and frogs in the ditch behind our house. mini bikes. little tiny dogs, loved those. and Granny...all the shows back then had wacky granny characters, Beverly Hillbillies, Laugh-In, Carol Burnett. If glue made it to season three thee was going to be a ventriloquist and a dummy with a giant head. I love those. And inside Snailbody's shell was huge, just like I Dream of Genie's bottle.

We had a great animator, a big canadian fellow named James Munro ( that's where the name of JJ Munro the albino frog came from). and a guy named J.T who also was the voice of Carlos the little bird who drives a steam roller. and wacky Catherine Dingman , who was Weeji and Trixie, worked at wildbrain in production.
My best pal Brad Mossman did the wonderful theme song. He was also the voice of Gooner and Mrs Munyon. My other best pal , surreal artist genius Eric White was the voice of JJ Munro (my favorite character) and Fred Nugat. My other favorite characters were Gooner and Rentweld (me), the bickering uber-nerds. Friends Steve Curly and Bill Hunt (from the band Cap'n Fatass) were the flash guys and the voices of Ponch and Shultzy the evil pool toy. Jason Porter had the coolest deep voice and was also a singe rin Cap'n fatass, he played Joe-ann the tranny troll. Phil Robinson, co-owner of wildbrain, was arther. Amy Capen from Colossal Pictures/Liquid Television was glue's producer.
The beauty part was Wildbrain's respect for my vision, even though i know i drove John Hayes crazy because i kept adding new characters each episode. I explained that it was going to be like Jay Ward meets Robert Altman (?) , or something, lots of random characters and then it all comes together at the end. And his concern was to keep Ponch, the dragster driving slug boy, as a main character. John gave me great advice in directing my first cartoon and pretty much let me do whatever i wanted. I remember when i met John Hayes, he was a director at colossal pictures and i was a cel painter, i ran into him in the kitchen pouring coffee and he said something like "You should be directing." I think i had done some drawings for a company pamphlet or something, and then they started letting me do designs for music videos and stuff. But that was the first time i considered directing cartoons. Thanks John! i guess I'm not a minimalist. I wanted to jam everything in. I am easily distracted, though. And I get an abundance of ideas and get anxious to use them all. whatever popped in my head that day ended up in glue. I was kind of like a kid in a puddle of mud making soup; leaves, sticks, an owl's hairball, all of it went in the bucket. a transvestite troll! an albino frog! yeah, wouldn't it be funny if ted nugent was in it? and carpet cleaning, I used to clean carpets, let's put that in (actually that was an homage to my dad who owned a carpet cleaning company in a town called Fremont. Dave fremont from fremont. enough said). mini trucks, mini bikes. muscle heads. Artist musician Justin White played Momo, brother of Mitch— the mean and muscly duo. so the glue saga grew, the seemingly random episodes began to overlap into each other, and all came full circle in an exciting, wacky conclusion.
and then the dot-com bubble burst. oh well. it was an amazing time so thanks to all the amazing people who helped put it together. even my 4 year old son did a voice of a spider. thanks milo!
glue was the funnest project I've created and...now it's back. hopefully we can expose a lot more people to it. and eventually all the episodes will be posted.
Someday, hopefelly, all the children around the world will be saying "Now outta my way freaks!"
